The Sustainable Traffic Management System (STMS) project seeks to address the traffic challenges in Bangladesh through a coordinated, sustainable approach involving multiple stakeholders. The initiative emphasizes transforming traffic police into community-oriented figures, creating a market-driven traffic system, and fostering cooperation among transport-related agencies.
The project is organized into three key processes:
Rebuilding Trust with Traffic Police: This process aims to improve public perception of traffic police by integrating student volunteers and marginalized groups into traffic management roles, encouraging inclusivity, and enhancing the operational capacity of the police force. Pilot programs will test the impact on traffic violations, travel time, and public sentiment.
Market-Driven Traffic System: This component develops a sustainable funding model where private entities, government, and volunteer groups collaborate. Revenue from parking management, shared ride services, and vendor licensing will be reinvested into traffic infrastructure, promoting accountability and transparency.
Coordination Among Agencies: Establishing a centralized communication hub and data-sharing platform will streamline decision-making among agencies like Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), enhancing the responsiveness and efficiency of traffic management.
The project is poised to generate significant improvements in urban mobility, environmental sustainability, and public trust, setting a scalable model for traffic reform across Bangladesh.
