Assessment of the Road Traffic Accident: A Study of the Bogura District, Bangladesh

Abstract

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) represent a significant public health concern globally, with particular relevance in developing countries like Bangladesh. The causes of RTAs are varied, but common factors include driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, distracted driving, and racing. Vehicle malfunctions, such as brake failure, and improper road conditions, such as craters or inadequate signage, also contribute to accidents. This research provides an overview of the present condition of road traffic accidents in Bogura district, Bangladesh. Bogura, a populous district in the northern region of Bangladesh, has been experiencing a notable increase in road traffic accidents in recent years. Factors contributing to this surge include rapid urbanization, inadequate infrastructure, lack of enforcement of traffic laws, increasing vehicle density, and insufficient road safety measures. The consequences of RTAs extend beyond loss of life and injury to include economic burdens, strain on healthcare systems, and societal impacts. In order to facilitate efficient visualization and comprehension, data from the Bogura Police Station were subjected to spatial analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) methods. The research results highlight that in Bogura the accidents occur at the highest rate during the day, specifically from 12.00 to 14.00 (GMT+6). Buses have been the cause of the preponderance of accidents. In contrast, the percentage of accidents involving cars is relatively minimal. The Goshai Para Road is the most hazardous; the frequency of road accidents was substantial in both 2022 and 2023. As a result, the most frequently occurring hazardous sub-districts for road accidents in Bogura are Shajahanpur and Sherpur. This research’s thorough study of traffic accidents will help improve road safety. By identifying accident causes and trends, authorities can minimize road user injuries and deaths, making roads safer for everyone.
